An Prediction Market Trader Earned $436K from Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A bill introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.
The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
